What Repeated Resaving Does To An Image

Every time a compressed image format is opened and saved again, a small amount of detail is discarded to keep the resulting file size manageable for sharing. Do this across several rounds of sharing, screenshotting and reposting, and the cumulative loss becomes visible as blur, blotchy colour and rough, smudged edges around text or faces in the frame.
This matters for verification because heavy compression can mimic the visual noise people sometimes associate with tampering, blocky patches or smudged detail, when the real cause is simply an ordinary image's long journey through multiple platforms rather than any deliberate edit performed by a person along the way.
A rough, low quality image is not automatically a fake one, and a crisp, clean image is not automatically genuine either. What compression damage does reliably tell you is how far a file has travelled and how many hands it has passed through, which remains useful context worth noting entirely on its own merits.
