Translation itself, whether automated or done carefully by a human, can subtly shift meaning even when technically accurate on the surface, since idioms, tone and emphasis do not always carry across languages cleanly, and a literal translation can sound considerably more or less certain than the original ever intended.
Where practically possible, checking the claim against its original language version, even with only an imperfect personal understanding of that language, helps catch cases where a translated summary has inadvertently sharpened or softened the original meaning along the way, sometimes without the translator even realising that it had actually happened at all in the process.
Automated translation tools remain useful starting points but are worth treating cautiously for anything carrying significant weight, particularly around nuance, qualification or emotional tone, where small shifts in wording can meaningfully change how a claim ultimately reads to a careful reader working patiently through the translated version of events.
