A byline names the specific person responsible for a piece of writing, and a linked author page often shows their other work, relevant credentials and particular areas of focus. Checking this page takes only moments and reveals whether the person has relevant experience or a track record genuinely worth weighing.
Missing bylines, generic staff attributions with no further detail offered, or author pages that lead nowhere useful are all worth noting, particularly on sites making specific technical or expert claims without any visible indication of who is actually making them in the first place or on what basis of expertise.
An unfamiliar author is not itself a problem on its own, everyone writes something for the first time eventually, but the absence of any way to check who is actually speaking removes a genuinely useful layer of accountability from the piece entirely, leaving readers with very little to go on.
