A pinned post sits permanently at the top of a profile regardless of when it was actually originally published, which means it can be considerably older than it might appear at first glance to a casual visitor. Checking the actual publish date rather than simply assuming recency avoids a fairly common and entirely understandable mistake.
Pinned posts are also curated quite deliberately by the account holder, chosen specifically to represent how an account wants to be seen by anyone who visits. Treating a pinned post as broadly representative of everything else on the profile can give a genuinely skewed impression compared with scrolling through the fuller, unfiltered history underneath.
