Teaching Students To Pause Before Sharing

The pause before sharing something is simple enough to state plainly and genuinely difficult to practise reliably under real conditions, since the exact moment something feels urgent or emotionally charged is precisely the moment the pause itself feels least natural or easy to actually apply well in practice under real pressure.

Teaching it effectively usually means naming the specific feeling that should trigger the pause clearly, a strong reaction, a wish to be first to share something exciting, rather than presenting the advice only abstractly, without any concrete, recognisable trigger attached to it for students to genuinely notice in the moment.

Practising with genuinely low stakes examples in class, noticing the urge to react quickly and consciously pausing before responding anyway, builds the reflex gradually and safely in a setting where the consequences of skipping the pause remain genuinely minor and reasonably low risk for everyone involved in the class.
