Rental Scam Patterns

Rental scams often involve a listing for a property at an unusually attractive price for the area, paired with a landlord who is conveniently unavailable to show the property in person and instead requests a deposit or first payment well before any actual viewing of the property ever takes place at all.

A common variant uses genuine photos of a real property lifted directly from another legitimate listing, paired with entirely fabricated contact details, meaning a reverse image search on the listing photos can sometimes reveal the very same images used elsewhere under a completely different property or price.

Insisting on viewing a property in person, or through a properly verified video call with someone confirmed to genuinely represent the actual owner or agent, before any payment ever changes hands, is the most reliable protection available against this particular pattern of fraud targeting prospective renters looking for a place to live.
