Recognising A Sockpuppet Account

A sockpuppet is a secondary account created and quietly controlled by someone already active elsewhere under their own name, typically used to support their own views, artificially inflate apparent agreement, or argue against their own established position without ever revealing the underlying connection between the two separate accounts.
Sockpuppets often share subtle tells with the account genuinely controlling them behind the scenes: similar phrasing used repeatedly, overlapping posting times across both accounts, or engagement patterns that line up closely together, even while the surface identity, name, photo, claimed background, differs entirely from one account to the other.
Because sockpuppets are built specifically to appear independent and unconnected, spotting one usually depends on noticing these behavioural overlaps carefully over time rather than judging the account's stated identity at face value, which is precisely the part deliberately designed to mislead a casual observer who has not looked any further into the connection.
