Provenance simply refers to the documented, traceable history of an item, image or piece of information, carefully tracing where it originally came from and how it has moved or changed hands since that original point. The term itself is borrowed from art and archival practice, where establishing clear origin is central to authenticity.
Applied specifically to digital content, provenance means being genuinely able to trace a piece of media back through its full history: who created it originally, when it was made, and how it has since been shared or altered along the way to eventually reach its current, present appearance.
Strong provenance, a clear, traceable chain leading back to an original source, meaningfully strengthens confidence in content, while unclear or entirely untraceable provenance is itself a reasonable basis for caution, regardless of how convincing or professional the content otherwise happens to appear at first sight to a casual viewer.
