An echo chamber describes an environment where a person is repeatedly exposed to information and opinions that simply reinforce views they already hold, with genuinely limited exposure to meaningfully different perspectives that might otherwise prompt some real reconsideration of their existing position on a given topic.
This particular effect can emerge from deliberate personal choices, such as which particular communities someone actively chooses to join, just as much as from any automated system at work behind the scenes, though algorithmic curation can certainly amplify a tendency that already existed toward selectively seeking out easy agreement rather than any genuine challenge to it.
Recognising an echo chamber within your own information habits usually starts with a fairly simple audit: how often does the information actually reaching you genuinely challenge an existing view you already hold, rather than simply confirming it comfortably and predictably each and every single time it happens to appear.
