Context collapse describes what happens when content originally created for one specific audience or narrow setting circulates far beyond that intended audience entirely, stripped along the way of the surrounding cues, tone, and shared understanding that originally made its true meaning clear to its actual, intended viewers in the first place.
A simple joke understood perfectly clearly within a small, tight knit community can read instead as a genuine, alarming statement once shared with a much wider audience unfamiliar with that particular community's tone and internal conventions, purely because the original surrounding context simply did not travel along together with it.
Recognising context collapse well in practice means pausing to ask, before reacting strongly to something surprising, whether it might actually make far more sense within an original setting that has simply been lost somewhere along the winding way to eventually reaching you personally within your own feed of content.
