Glossary: Clickbait
Launch library · evergreen read

Clickbait describes content, usually a headline specifically, deliberately designed to generate clicks by creating curiosity or provoking a genuinely strong emotional reaction in the reader, sometimes at the direct expense of accurately representing what the linked content underneath actually and honestly contains once a reader clicks all the way through.
The format itself is not inherently dishonest by definition, plenty of entirely accurate stories use an intriguing headline to draw readers in, but the term specifically flags cases where the gap between promise and delivery is unusually wide, prioritising raw engagement over an honest, accurate preview of the content.
Recognising clickbait is less about spotting any single trick in isolation and more about noticing a broader pattern: headlines that deliberately withhold obvious information specifically to manufacture curiosity rather than to summarise the underlying content fairly and honestly for the reader who is still deciding whether to click all the way through it.
