A bot is an automated account or program that performs specific actions, posting content, replying to others, liking posts, entirely without any human directly controlling each individual action taken. Bots themselves range widely, from clearly labelled, genuinely useful automated services all the way through to deceptive accounts deliberately designed to look like real, genuine human users.
Not all bots are inherently harmful in any way, since many perform entirely legitimate, openly disclosed functions for their operators, but bots specifically designed to mimic genuine engagement or artificially inflate apparent support for a particular message remain a recurring concern within account checking specifically as a category.
Spotting a likely bot in practice usually involves noticing broader patterns rather than any single decisive sign on its own: posting frequency that seems unusually high, phrasing repetition across many posts, and response timing that would genuinely be difficult for a real person to sustain consistently over time.
