Gift Card Payment Red Flags
Launch library · evergreen read

A request for payment specifically in gift cards is one of the more reliable scam indicators available anywhere, since gift cards are genuinely difficult to trace and effectively impossible to reverse once the codes themselves have been shared, making them a strongly preferred method across many otherwise quite different scam formats and approaches.
No legitimate business, tax office, utility provider or government agency anywhere accepts payment this way, regardless of how urgent or officially worded the surrounding request happens to sound at the time. This single fact alone resolves most cases where the payment method itself is the clearest available evidence.
If a request specifically requires gift cards as payment, treating that request as a scam by default, well before evaluating anything else about the surrounding message, is a genuinely reasonable and well supported default position to take in almost every circumstance you are ever likely to actually encounter it.
