An Exercise On Spotting Urgency Tactics Under Time Pressure
Launch library · evergreen read

Set a short timer running and work through a handful of messages, some genuine, some scam examples mixed in, deciding quickly which ones rely heavily on manufactured urgency. Time pressure during the exercise itself mimics, in a controlled and safe way, the same pressure a real scam message actually applies to its target.
Afterward, review the decisions made under that time pressure against a slower, considerably more careful second look at the same messages. Noticing which judgements changed on reflection highlights exactly how urgency itself can degrade careful thinking, even when all the underlying signals were genuinely available all along to notice.
This exercise works particularly well when practised repeatedly over time, since the specific skill actually being trained here is not spotting the tactic purely in theory but resisting its real effect on judgement in the exact moment it is genuinely applied against you by whoever sent the message.
